Today I’m sharing an interesting gardening tip I discovered via Home Guides. Now, garlic is a great aphid repellent and used a lot when it comes to companion planting–a basic tenet of organic gardening–and planting it near roses will do wonders to keep your bushes healthy and happy by repelling aphids. But did you know that orange peels work to repel aphids, too?

Organic Authority says that placing orange peels around affected plants will deter the pests. Better yet, tear the peels–not all the way through–and attach them to the stems near the infected area using the tear. In a matter of hours, it will be problem solved. Seems orange peels contain d-Limonene, a natural chemical that destroys the waxy coating on aphids (and ants!) causing them to suffocate and die. Sounds harsh, but so is the discovery of a dead rose bush.

Welcome to the 4th Annual Authors in Bloom Blog Hop where you’ll discover a host of gardening tips and delicious recipes, plus some terrific giveaways, including the grand prize ereader and gift card!

To start off the hop, I’m going to share a tip on how to improve your rose bed by incorporating companion planting into your garden. Companion planting is basically combining plants that grow together in a harmonious or symbiotic manner.

Roses produce gorgeous blooms, but are often plagued by disease and pests. One trick to improve your rose plant’s growth is to plant it alongside garlic, because garlic will repel the unwanted beasts that might attack your roses. You can spray your plants with a garlic spray, however that might interfere with the glorious fragrance of your roses. Onions will also work well, because bugs (like many humans) are put off by the pungent scent. Birds attacking your berry plants and trees? Try garlic spray!

The stuff works. It also works in and around your vegetable garden. Only make sure to keep onions away from beans, peas and asparagus. Not friends in the garden.

Time for the giveaway goods! You have several ways to enter via the rafflecopter below and remember, to be eligible for the grand prize you must visit each and every blog on the hop over the next ten days. You don’t have to enter every contest but you must at least leave a comment on their Authors in Bloom Blog Hop post so I’ll know you were there.

For me, this year’s gardening tip is all about weeds–or the lack of them. No one wants to spend their time weeding when they visit the beautiful beds of their garden and one way to eliminate/reduce this job is corn gluten. Non-toxic and safe for animals and kids, sprinkling this around the base of your plants will significantly reduce the amount of weeds by preventing germination. CAUTION: Be sure to apply once your veggies have had a chance to sprout and grow several inches in height. Upon application, water in and allow to dry.

However, after heavy rains, you’ll want to reapply as your weeds might be able to “recover.” Don’t give them the chance! You can find corn gluten at many garden centers, but if your neighborhood seed & feed doesn’t carry it, you can always ask them to order it special. Online organic retailers also carry it.

The Gables box setFor my personal giveaway, I’m offering an autographed complete print set of The Gables Trilogy, including award-winning Jennifer’s Garden, Lust on the Rocks & Whisper Privileges.
